Historic Falkland Farm:
The Barn
An alpaca's barn is her castle - refuge from the heavier
snows and ice of the winter days, a place to escape the summer
heat when the need arises, and a maternity ward for females
expected to deliver their crias in the next 30 days.

The barn was built originally for a horse barn, but Ernie
has remodeled it steadily over the past 13 years to the needs
of the alpacas. Twenty two horse stalls have been disassembled
and replaced with several large fenced and gated areas. The
barn floors have been covered with rubber mats to simplify
the daily cleaning chores and improve hygiene.
The barn includes a spacious, heated office; storage bays
for hay, feed supplements, and medical supplies; restroom
facilities, and a room for storing the sheared fleeces.
The office walls are lined with whiteboards used to track
the due dates of all pregnant females, schedules for monthly
veterinary visits and routine injections, and a history of
daily weights for all new born crias still in the maternity
ward or the "nursery" pastures.
